The European Union RoHS 2011/65/EU Directive restricts the use of six materials in electronic components and assemblies.
Specifically, these materials are Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI), Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE).
According to the directive principles the use of these substances is prohibited in all products. The Directive of August 2005 sets specific limits for the six materials as follows:
- a maximum of 0.01 weight percent cadmium
- a maximum of 0.1 weight percent of lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE.
